Mount Vernon has produced two North Carolina Teachers of the Year.
- James "Jay" Rogers in 1972
- Mrs. Annie Pegram in 1991
The teacher selected serves on the NC Board of Education for two years. Jay Rogers went on to be awarded the 1972 National Teacher of the Year at the White House. He was the 1st African American to ever receive that honor!
Two of the ten first African American firemen in Durham were from Mount Vernon.
- Velton Thompson – October 1, 1958
- Jairus C. Wilson – September 1, 1966
In the early 1940s, children from Mount Vernon contributed to the building fund by collecting buffalo nickles.
