Youth Ministry

At Mount Vernon, youth are inspired to build a ministry with a Christ-centered community of youth who are dedicated to challenging and encouraging each other to live faithful lives for Jesus Christ. Our goal is to pursue a deeper and closer relationship with Jesus Christ by participating in: Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Ministry and Service.

Hey! Did You Know?

Mount Vernon has produced two North Carolina Teachers of the Year?

  • James "Jay" Rogers in 1972
  • Mrs. Annie Pegram in 1991

The teacher selected serves on the NC Board of Education for two years. Jay Rogers went on to be awarded the 1972 National Teacher of the Year at the White House. He was the 1st African American to ever receive that honor!

 

Two of the original 10 African American firemen in Durham are from Mount Vernon?

  • Velton Thompson, October 1, 1958
  • Jairus C. Wilson, September 1, 1966

 

In the early 1940's, children of Mount Vernon contributed to the church building fund by collecting buffalo nickels.
